27 year old Juan Carlos Artiles was found shot to death inside a residence in Portland’s Lents neighborhood in the early morning hours of September 4, 2022. Officers were dispatched just before 5:45 a.m. to the 6000 block of Southeast 90th Avenue, near Southeast Woodstock Boulevard, where they discovered the victim deceased. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was a gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
Homicide detectives assumed the investigation that day, as the neighborhood woke to police tape and the quiet churn of an unfolding case.
In the days that followed, investigators worked to piece together what had happened inside the home. On September 13, 2022, authorities announced the arrest and arraignment of 46-year-old Shaka Imani Chambers in connection with the killing. Prosecutors charged him with murder in the second degree with a firearm, first-degree burglary with a firearm constituting domestic violence, and unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm. The arrest marked a turning point in a case that began with a predawn call and a single gunshot that left a 27-year-old man dead inside a Southeast Portland home.
Court proceedings moved forward over the next months and years. In July 2024, a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge sentenced Chambers to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 25 years, following a jury’s guilty verdict for the 2022 murder of the 27-year-old male victim. The outcome closed the loop that began on that September morning—an arrest, a trial, and finally a life sentence—etched into the public record as the official resolution of the case.
