In the early morning hours of August 29, 1992, the life of 16-year-old Kenneth Wells was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. An African-American male, Wells was with an associate, stepping out of a vehicle on the 6100 block of NE 10th Avenue in Portland, Oregon, at approximately 5:20 a.m. when the fatal encounter occurred.
Without warning, a solid-colored 4-door sedan carrying four to five unidentified individuals pulled up beside them.
A volley of shots rang out from the vehicle, striking Wells multiple times. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene, his life extinguished in a matter of moments. The car carrying the assailants sped away, heading northbound on NE 10th Avenue and disappearing into the dawn.
Investigators quickly suspected the shooting was not a random act of violence. Wells was known to be an associate of the Woodlawn Park Bloods, leading police to believe his murder was gang-related. Despite this lead, the case grew cold over the years, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified.
The murder of Kenneth Wells remains an open and unsolved case. Law enforcement has periodically sought the public's help, encouraging witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
