On the evening of November 14, 1995, a promising young Black / African American man named Brian Todd Mitchell, aged 24, returned to his home in the 4300 block of NE Hazelfern Place in Portland, Oregon. At approximately 8:45 pm, after parking his black 1986 Ford Thunderbird across the street from his residence, the night was shattered by the sound of numerous gunshots.
Mitchell had just been to rent some videos and was making his way home.
His roommates and neighbors, startled by the gunfire, looked outside to a horrific scene. Brian Todd Mitchell was lying on the ground near his vehicle. As people rushed to his aid, they discovered he had been shot in the head and leg. Despite the immediate attention, his injuries were fatal. Mitchell, who was described by his family as a good kid, a superb athlete, and musically gifted, was employed in the shipping department of The Oregonian. Investigators have confirmed that he was not involved in any gang or criminal activity.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the investigation has yet to lead to any arrests, and no specific suspects have been named. The shooter's method, whether on foot or from a vehicle, remains uncertain. Witnesses reported seeing two vehicles leaving the area shortly after the gunshots. One was described as a mid-1980s Toyota or K-car type vehicle, and another was identified as a VW Rabbit-type vehicle. However, investigators have not been able to confirm if either of these vehicles was involved in the homicide. The case remains an unsolved felony, and authorities continue to seek information from the public that might lead to an arrest.
