On the evening of July 3, 2019, the life of 28-year-old James David Alan Echols was abruptly ended in a burst of violence outside his home on Cooper Street in Hot Springs, Arkansas. A salesman and a loving husband and father, Echols was in the presence of his wife and three children when he was fatally shot. In the immediate aftermath, one of his young daughters, in a heart-wrenching display of innocence, was reportedly heard wanting to get 'band-aids for daddy.'

The Hot Springs Police Department responded to a call about the shooting at approximately 10:12 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered James Echols deceased inside the residence. The investigation into his death quickly pointed towards a suspect. The following day, on July 4, 2019, law enforcement officers apprehended Christopher Dean Harnar in connection with the killing. His arrest was not without drama, as it came after a standoff at a house located just two doors down from the scene of the crime.
Following his capture, Christopher Harnar faced multiple serious charges, including Murder in the Second Degree, two counts of Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm by Certain Persons. While a motive for the shooting was not immediately made public, Harnar was taken into custody and held at the Garland County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
