In the summer of 2019, the life of 23-year-old Kenneth 'Lil Kenny' Duane Kelly Jr. was tragically cut short in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas. On the afternoon of June 13th, officers from the Hot Springs Police Department responded to a call of shots fired at a residence on Portland Street. Inside, they discovered Kelly, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds in what investigators would come to describe as a homicide.
The initial investigation pointed to a home invasion robbery
involving at least two male suspects. One of the assailants was believed to have been wounded during the incident, as blood was left at the scene. Descriptions of the two individuals sought in connection with the murder were released to the public in the hopes of generating leads. One suspect was described as being approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall with a medium build and twisted dreadlocks, while the second was said to be about 5 feet 9 inches with a slender build. Both were believed to be in their early twenties. In the weeks that followed, the family and friends of Kelly, along with a local funeral home, offered a reward for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death.
For years, the case remained a painful open wound for Kelly's loved ones and the community. The search for answers continued, with law enforcement diligently working to bring those responsible to justice. A significant breakthrough finally came in August 2024, more than five years after the fatal shooting. The Hot Springs Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect, Rickey Wilson Jr., in connection with Kelly's murder.
The arrest was the result of a crucial piece of evidence from the crime scene. DNA collected in 2019 was processed by the Arkansas State Crime Lab and, on August 12, 2024, it returned a match to Rickey Wilson Jr. Following this pivotal development, Wilson was taken into custody and faced a series of grave charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated residential burglary, and aggravated robbery. He was subsequently held at the Garland County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond, marking a long-awaited step towards closure in the investigation of Kenneth 'Lil Kenny' Duane Kelly Jr.'s untimely death.
