On the evening of January 17, 2019, the life of George Michael Atkeson, a 62-year-old male, was brought to a violent end in a residence in Portland, Oregon. The fatal incident unfolded in the 5300 block of Northeast 74th Avenue, where police responded to reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Mr. Atkeson deceased at the scene.
An autopsy conducted by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was homicidal violence.
Another individual, Darlene Marie Kelley, was also found at the residence with injuries. Tragically, a dog named Mai Tai was also killed during the violent encounter.
The investigation into the death of George Michael Atkeson led to the identification of a suspect, 64-year-old Reza Chehrazi Mardani. In the days following the incident, a grand jury returned a seven-count indictment against Mardani. The charges brought against him included one count of murder with a firearm for the death of Mr. Atkeson.
In addition to the murder charge, Mardani faced several other serious allegations. These included one count of attempted aggravated murder with a firearm related to the attack on Darlene Marie Kelley, one count of assault in the first degree with a firearm, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm, one count of aggravated animal abuse in the first degree with a firearm, and one count of animal abuse in the first degree. The case against Mardani proceeded through the legal system, with his next court date scheduled for March 7, 2019.
