On July 2, 1991, 40-year-old white male Jay Andrew Rickbeil was found dead in his Portland, Oregon apartment. Rickbeil, a paraplegic who lived on Social Security benefits, was known for his generosity and openness. He followed a New Age spiritual path and often welcomed strangers into his home, sometimes offering them money or companionship. Tragically, this kindness may have contributed to his death.
