In the quiet community of Waverly, West Virginia, the disappearance of Robert L. Throckmorton in May of 2022 would remain a mystery for nearly a year. The 51-year-old White male had vanished without a trace, leaving his family deeply concerned. It wasn't until April of the following year that the grim truth began to surface, revealing a story of a volatile relationship that ended in violence and concealment.
The investigation into Throckmorton's disappearance eventually led law enforcement to the residence of his girlfriend, Melody Ann Anderson. During the execution of a search warrant at her home, Anderson confessed to killing Throckmorton and burying his body on her property. His remains were discovered on April 22, 2023. Anderson claimed that the shooting occurred after Throckmorton attempted to sexually assault her.
She stated that she retrieved a gun, concealed it under her pillow, and shot him in the head when he returned to the room and tried to force himself on her.
Following her confession, Melody Ann Anderson, then 50, was arrested and faced charges of murder and concealment of a deceased human body. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in August 2024, Anderson entered a plea agreement, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and concealment of a deceased human body. Her defense attorney argued for leniency, citing a history of physical abuse Anderson allegedly suffered at the hands of Throckmorton during their volatile relationship. Anderson herself expressed remorse for her actions and the impact on both of their families. In October 2024, a Wood County Circuit Judge sentenced Anderson to 40 years in prison for the second-degree murder charge and an additional one to five years for the concealment of a body, with the sentences to be served consecutively. The investigation also revealed that following Throckmorton's death, Anderson had fraudulently used his veterans benefit card for numerous purchases.
