John Dillon, a 35-year-old man serving as a constable in Mingo County, was killed in Dingess, West Virginia, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1901, after being called into a rapidly escalating disturbance. Several men from neighboring Logan County had ridden into Dingess and, according to a contemporary newspaper account, were intoxicated as they moved along the town's business streets firing revolvers seemingly at random.
