On the evening of April 8, 1993, a dispute between neighbors in a quiet, rural area of Ritchie County, West Virginia, set in motion a chain of events that would end in tragedy. Senior Trooper Larry Gene Hacker, a 34-year-old White male and a respected member of the West Virginia State Police, responded to a seemingly routine complaint. A resident, Dennis Ferguson, had blocked a neighbor's access to their home with his truck and then positioned himself on a nearby knoll to watch the vehicle.
