In the late summer of 1911, a sense of duty weighed heavily on the shoulders of Marshal George M. Butcher, a 45-year-old Caucasian man serving the community of Missouri Valley, Iowa. On August 16th, his path fatefully crossed with two suspicious men, setting in motion a tragic chain of events that would end his life and send shockwaves through the small town.
With eight years of service under his belt, Butcher was a seasoned lawman, a husband, and a father to six children.
On that Wednesday, while conducting a search of the two individuals, the encounter took a sudden and violent turn. One of the men, without warning, brandished a handgun and fired at the Marshal twice. Despite being wounded, Butcher bravely returned fire, holding his ground until a third and fatal shot struck him down.
The suspects, who were later discovered to be brothers and escapees from the Anamosa Prison, immediately fled the scene. A determined posse was quickly formed to hunt them down. The pursuit led to the banks of the Missouri River near Omaha, Nebraska. In a desperate attempt to evade capture, the two fugitives tried to swim across the powerful river, but the current proved to be an unforgiving accomplice to justice. Both men drowned, their escape and their lives cut short in the murky depths. Back in Missouri Valley, a town mourned the loss of a dedicated Marshal who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
