John David Killen, a 41-year-old Caucasian male, died on August 10, 2022, in Altoona, Iowa. His life, primarily spent working as a diesel mechanic, was cut short by an act of gun violence. Known for his love of the outdoors, he often spent his free time fishing and camping. He was also a man who enjoyed looking at trucks, listening to music, and was often considered the life of the party.
On that Wednesday in August, at the residence he shared with his girlfriend, Marique Ruth, a heated
argument broke out. The dispute reportedly centered on financial matters and ongoing issues within their relationship, which had lasted less than a year. The argument escalated tragically, and Ruth admitted to shooting Killen four times. She confessed that he was not threatening her and was unarmed at the time of the shooting. Furthermore, she made no attempt to call for help using her cell phone after the incident.
Seven months later, in March 2023, Marique Ruth was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with John Killen's death. The legal proceedings continued for over two years, culminating in a conviction by a Polk County jury. In November 2024, Ruth was found guilty of first-degree murder. Her sentencing was scheduled for the following month, with the mandatory sentence in Iowa for such a conviction being life in prison without the possibility of parole.
