In the summer of 2022, the life of a bright and energetic three-year-old Black male named Damari Sanders was tragically cut short in Coralville, Iowa. On the afternoon of Sunday, July 3, 2022, emergency services were dispatched to an apartment in the 900 block of Boston Way following a report of a child with gunshot injuries. Upon arrival, they found young Damari in critical condition.
He was swiftly transported by ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Despite the urgent medical care he received, Damari succumbed to his injuries at 6:56 p.m. that same evening, surrounded by his family. Known affectionately as 'Chubbs,' Damari was remembered for his enormous heart and an even bigger smile. He was a child full of life who loved to dance, play with his brothers, and bring joy to those around him. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving his loved ones to grapple with an unimaginable loss.
In the immediate aftermath, the Coralville Police Department, in conjunction with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
