On the evening of February 28, 2022, a dispute at the GD Express gas station on Pine Street in Davenport, Iowa, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 25-year-old Corey Dariyon Mykal Martin, a Black / African American male. An altercation that broke out late that Monday night ultimately led to a fatal shooting.
Law enforcement responded to the incident and swiftly began an investigation. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of a suspect.
The individual taken into custody was subsequently charged in connection with Martin's death.
Following the arrest, the case proceeded through the legal system. On August 21, 2023, the man accused of the shooting was found guilty. He was later sentenced to life in prison for his role in the death of Corey Martin.
The community mourned the loss of Martin, who was remembered as a loving father and a young man with entrepreneurial aspirations. His family and friends gathered to honor his memory at a visitation on Friday, March 11, 2022, followed by a funeral service the next day at the All Faith Chapel at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home.
