In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 20, 2017, the life of 28-year-old Marcus Hampton, a Black male from Davenport, Iowa, was tragically cut short. Responding to reports of gunfire around 4 a.m., Davenport police officers arrived at the 100 block of E. 35th Street to find a chaotic scene. There, they discovered Hampton suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arrival.
The violence of that morning did not end with Hampton's shooting. Roughly ten minutes after he was found, another man arrived at Genesis East Hospital by private vehicle, also suffering from a gunshot wound. Investigators believed the two shootings were related, adding another layer of complexity to the burgeoning homicide case. At the time, Hampton’s death marked the tenth homicide in Davenport that year, contributing to a growing concern over a recent spike in gun violence in the city.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Davenport Police Chief Paul Sikorski stated that the recent string of shootings appeared to be "target-specific and retaliatory." Authorities announced that there would be an increase in patrols to address the escalating violence. Despite these efforts and a public appeal for information, no arrests were immediately reported in connection with Marcus Hampton's death. As of late 2025, there have been no subsequent online reports detailing any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the murder of Marcus Hampton, leaving the case unresolved.
