In the early morning hours of June 7, 2017, the life of 34-year-old Cainnan Devance Gates III, a Black/African American man, was cut short in a Davenport, Iowa residence. Police were summoned to the home around 2:30 a.m. following reports of a gunshot victim. Upon their arrival, they discovered Gates inside, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his death was subsequently classified as a homicide.
