Earlier that evening, Smith had
made a purchase at the EZ Mart on Brady Street. As he left the store, words were exchanged with two individuals, 18-year-old Quantrell L. McDaniel and 23-year-old Dantawn Lavon Cole. Following this brief altercation, Smith continued on his way, walking alone westbound on East Garfield Street. However, the encounter had set a deadly course of action into motion. McDaniel and Cole proceeded to a nearby residence on North Brady Street, where they obtained a. 22-caliber handgun from a 25-year-old man named Marcello Cordell Miller.
Armed with the stolen firearm, McDaniel and Cole sought out Smith. They located him near the intersection of Garfield and Dubuque Streets, where the situation took a fatal turn.
