In the winter of 2021, the life of Khalil Said Pugh, a 28-year-old male, came to a violent and tragic end in Clinton, Iowa. Concerns for his welfare first arose on February 24, when the Clinton Police Department received a tip about a possible shooting that had occurred the day before. This led them to the Gateway Apartments, where they were met with silence at the door of one of the units. After obtaining a search warrant, officers entered the apartment to discover what they would later describe as a violent crime scene, where a single 9mm shell casing was found. In the parking lot outside, Pugh’s car and cell phone were located, but he was nowhere to be found. His family and friends confirmed that no one had heard from him since February 23, the day the shooting was alleged to have taken place.
Initially, the investigation cast a wide net, and law enforcement publicly identified Pugh and another man, Ja'Kwane Polidore, who owned the apartment, as persons of interest. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation joined the case, and a painstaking 18-month-long inquiry began. Interviews with other residents of the apartment building revealed that there had been an altercation and gunshots heard from Polidore's apartment. Suspicion eventually fell upon Lewis Vaughn, Sr., the 44-year-old maintenance man for the building, who was seen with Pugh shortly before the incident.
The lengthy investigation ultimately pieced together the events of that fateful day. It was determined that a physical altercation between Lewis Vaughn and Khalil Pugh had escalated, culminating in Vaughn shooting Pugh twice, which resulted in his death. Following the murder, Vaughn called his 35-year-old wife, Jessica Vaughn, asking for her help. According to authorities, she assisted her husband in moving Pugh's body from the apartment and into his truck. From there, the couple drove to a dumpster where they disposed of the body. In a grim turn of events for the investigators, they learned that the dumpster had been emptied just one day before they were able to search it.
Despite the disposal of the body, crucial evidence was uncovered. A search of Lewis Vaughn’s truck revealed the presence of blood, which was later confirmed to be human. Investigators also found blood evidence within the apartment and in the dumpster where the body had been discarded. DNA analysis confirmed that the blood from all three locations belonged to Khalil Pugh. Based on the culmination of evidence from the extensive investigation, police arrested the couple in August 2022. Lewis Vaughn, Sr. was charged with first-degree murder, and his wife, Jessica Vaughn, was charged with abuse of a corpse for her role in attempting to conceal the crime.
