In the autumn of 2021, the life of 22-year-old Tayshawn David was tragically cut short. On the evening of October 15th, inside a residence on the 5100 block of Curtis Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, David was fatally shot. The incident prompted an immediate response from the Baltimore Police Department, who arrived to find David suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly.
On the very same day as the homicide, authorities arrested 19-year-old Jaesiah Neal in Timonium, Maryland. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Tayshawn David's death. Investigators suggested a possible motive of jealousy, alleging that Neal had shot David because the victim had started a relationship with Neal's ex-girlfriend.
The case against Jaesiah Neal proceeded to trial, where the prosecution presented its evidence. A key component of their case was the testimony of an eyewitness who claimed to have seen the shooter fire multiple shots through a window after gaining access to the apartment via a fire escape. Video evidence reportedly showed someone climbing the fire escape, and Neal's fingerprints were found on the apartment window. During the trial, however, the eyewitness admitted to not being entirely truthful with police initially, having omitted her own communications with Neal before and after the shooting. This included a text message she sent to Neal which read, 'I'm going to kill him,' referring to David.
After a four-day trial, on October 28, 2022, a jury found Jaesiah Neal not guilty of murder and related weapons charges. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the charges of home invasion and conspiracy to commit a home invasion. Following the acquittal on the most serious charges, a judge later denied Neal bail on the remaining charges, deeming him a potential danger to the public.
