On an autumn day in Baltimore, Maryland, 34-year-old Lewis Jackson was fatally shot while sitting in his car. The incident occurred on October 4, 1996, in the 2900 block of Springhill Avenue. An assailant approached the vehicle and fired multiple shots, ending Jackson's life.
The investigation into the murder led police to a suspect named Rodney Addison.
Based on the testimony of a primary witness, Addison was arrested, and in April 1998, he was convicted of second-degree murder and a handgun violation. He received a 30-year prison sentence for his alleged role in Jackson's death. However, the case was far from closed.
Years later, a significant development emerged that would completely alter the course of justice in the case. In October 2021, a judge ordered a new trial for Addison. The decision was based on the revelation that the prosecution had failed to disclose crucial witness statements that undermined the original verdict. These statements contradicted the account of the main witness against Addison. During a post-conviction hearing, that same key witness recanted her testimony, admitting she had been under the influence of drugs at the time of the shooting and had not actually seen the events unfold. New evidence also suggested the suspect had fled on foot, not on a bicycle as the witness had initially claimed. Furthermore, a photo lineup from 1996 showed that another witness had identified a different person as the shooter. Faced with these inconsistencies and the unreliability of the original evidence, city prosecutors ultimately dropped all charges against Rodney Addison, acknowledging they could not proceed with a new trial.
