Malik Saeed, a 19-year-old White man, was attending a friend's birthday party in Salt Lake City, Utah, on the night of May 28, 2021. The large gathering, with an estimated 50 to 60 people, was taking place at a rental house located at 2393 E. 1700 South. According to his family, Malik was at the party when he encountered his killer at the front door of the home.
Just after midnight, in the early hours of May 29, the celebration was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Police reports indicate that Malik was shot during an altercation at the front door with another man. One report stated he was shot at least six times. A neighbor who heard seven or eight gunshots called the police. As chaos erupted, many of the partygoers fled the scene in all directions. When officers and medical personnel arrived, they found Malik with severe gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The Salt Lake City Police Department's investigation was immediately challenged by the fact that many potential witnesses had left before officers could interview them. According to Malik’s family, people who were at the party later refused to speak with investigators about what they saw. In the days following the shooting, police released information about a vehicle of interest, asking the public for help in locating a lime green Dodge Charger or Challenger with black stripes. The car may have had damage to its rear end.
Despite the description of the vehicle, no suspects have ever been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
