In the crisp autumn air of Salt Lake City, a dispute over something as small as a cigarette escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 38-year-old Nickolas Parks. On the morning of October 11, 2022, at the Wasatch Inn on South State Street, an argument ignited between Parks and another man, Joseph Marquez. Though Parks and his girlfriend attempted to walk away from the confrontation, the conflict was far from over.

Marquez, 60 years old at the time, reportedly followed Parks back to his motel room, his anger apparently unabated. The verbal altercation resumed, tragically culminating in gunfire. An eyewitness reported seeing Marquez shoot Parks in the head. In the immediate aftermath, Parks was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where he remained on life support for several days. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on October 17, 2022.

The investigation into the shooting led Salt Lake City police to two suspects. Joseph Marquez was identified as the alleged shooter. Another man, 71-year-old Thomas Leory Glasker, was accused of handing the gun to Marquez and driving him away from the motel following the incident. Both men were arrested, initially on charges including attempted murder.

Following Parks' death, the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office was expected to consider upgrading the charges to murder. The arrests brought a swift, if somber, development to a case that began with a seemingly minor disagreement and ended in a senseless loss of life, leaving friends and family to mourn the passing of Nickolas Parks.
