In the spring of 2020, the life of 18-year-old Lewis Orlando Jensen Jr. was tragically cut short. A resident of Salt Lake City, Utah, Lewis was born on January 16, 2002. Friends and family remember him for his witty personality and a contagious smile that could brighten any room. An outgoing young man, he had a large and loving family and was known for being a "mammas boy". Having recently graduated from Horizonte Instruction Center, he was poised to take on the world.
His childhood was filled with sports, playing on the Jr. Jazz Basketball, West High Panthers Football, and Rose Park Baseball teams.
On the evening of May 16, 2020, a dispute between two groups led to a fatal confrontation at Kings Point Park in West Valley City. During the altercation, Lewis Orlando Jensen was shot. First responders and staff at Intermountain Health Care Hospital worked to save his life, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
Following the shooting, an investigation led to the arrest of a 16-year-old male in connection with the incident. The suspect was later identified as Deivi Perez Prado Jr., who was 17 at the time of the shooting. According to charging documents, Prado brought a gun to the park where the two groups met to "settle a dispute". Witnesses stated that Prado initially fired shots over the other group's heads. Jensen then ran toward Prado and was shot while trying to take the gun away from him.
Deivi Perez Prado Jr. was later certified to stand trial as an adult. He was charged with manslaughter, a first-degree felony; obstructing justice, a second-degree felony; and felony discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony. In a plea deal, Prado, then 19, pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The remaining charges were dismissed.
