In the warm summer night of July 14, 2019, the life of 19-year-old Neko Jardine, a male of Asian or Pacific Islander descent, was tragically cut short. A recent graduate and star football player from Kearns High School, Neko was at a house party in West Valley City, a suburb of Salt Lake City, when violence erupted just after midnight. He was a beloved figure, described by his family as a "gentle giant" who often served as a positive role model for younger relatives.
That night, his instinct to protect others would place him in harm's way.
The party, attended by 30 to 40 people, was interrupted when two cars arrived and their occupants called for people to come outside. An ongoing dispute with someone who lived at the residence, who was not present at the time, is believed to have been the catalyst for the confrontation. Witnesses reported that the newcomers questioned partygoers about gang affiliations before a fight broke out. As the chaos escalated, between 10 and 12 gunshots were fired. Neko, reportedly attempting to act as a peacemaker and prevent his cousins from getting involved in the altercation, was struck by bullets in the neck, chest, and torso. He was rushed to a hospital by a friend and underwent emergency surgery, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Two other young men were also injured in the shooting but survived.
The investigation that followed was extensive, with West Valley City Police dedicating hundreds of hours to the case. In the initial aftermath, police appealed to the many party attendees who had fled the scene to come forward with information. The investigation led to a significant development in October 2019, when three suspects were arrested: 18-year-old Jose Joel Nunez Perez, 21-year-old Arnol Francisco Perez-Zelaya, and 19-year-old Luis Sebastian-Enciso. Forensic evidence, including ballistics from the two different 9mm handguns used in the shooting, linked the suspects to the scene and to other shootings in the Salt Lake Valley. A red sedan matching a vehicle owned by Nunez Perez was also captured on surveillance footage.
However, in a later turn of events, it appears formal charges were never filed against the initial three men arrested. The case saw a major breakthrough in January 2025, when prosecutors charged Jose Antonio Flores-Carrillo, then 21, with murder and two counts of causing injury with a gun. Flores-Carrillo was just 15 years old at the time of the shooting. According to charging documents, witnesses identified him as one of the individuals who arrived at the party looking for a fight and claimed he was one of the shooters. His case was moved to adult court, where he now faces the consequences of that fatal night. The investigation suggested that Neko Jardine was an innocent victim, caught in the crossfire of a conflict he had no part in, a promising life extinguished by senseless violence.
