In the early morning hours of October 6, 2018, the life of 18-year-old Raul Castillo Rivera, a Hispanic male, was tragically cut short in Salt Lake City, Utah. Born in Mexico City, he was known for his contagious smile and caring heart, bringing laughter to those around him. An athlete and music enthusiast, he enjoyed skateboarding, soccer, basketball, and weightlifting.
On that fateful Saturday, at approximately 12:38 a.m., gunshots echoed in a parking lot near 644 N. Darwin Street.
It is reported that two cars carrying rival gang members had converged at this location. The occupants of one vehicle recognized Raul Castillo Rivera and opened fire on the car he was in. He was struck in the back by the gunfire.
Following the shooting, Salt Lake City police initially responded to reports of shots fired but could not immediately locate evidence of the incident. A short time later, a call came from a hospital in Bountiful, informing them that a young man, later identified as Raul Castillo Rivera, had been brought in with a gunshot wound and had succumbed to his injuries. Investigators then returned to the vicinity of the reported shooting and discovered handgun casings and other evidence in the parking area.
The death of Raul Castillo Rivera is being investigated as a homicide. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, his case is considered an unsolved cold case. To date, no arrests have been made, and no specific suspects have been publicly identified in connection with his murder. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek information from the public.
