In the late afternoon of August 12, 2020, a verbal dispute in the streets of Salt Lake City escalated into a fatal encounter for 49-year-old Luis Melendez, a Hispanic male. The incident occurred near 54 E. Harrison Ave. where Melendez was reportedly engaged in an argument with two other men. According to a witness, the argument grew heated, culminating in one of the suspects raising a handgun and firing a single shot at Melendez's head.
