In the late summer of 1980, a tragedy unfolded near Liberty Park in Salt Lake City that cut short the lives of two young men. On August 20, David Lemar Martin III, an 18-year-old Black male, was shot and killed. He was not alone in his fate; 20-year-old Theodore Tracy 'Ted' Fields also lost his life in the same violent incident. The senseless act was not a random street crime but the work of a man consumed by racial hatred.
The perpetrator was identified as Joseph Paul Franklin, a white
supremacist and serial killer who targeted minorities. Franklin's reign of terror spanned across the country, marked by a series of murders and violent attacks. The killings of Martin and Fields were among the many crimes for which he was eventually brought to justice. His motivation was a twisted ideology of hate, and he would later confess to the murders.
Franklin was ultimately apprehended and faced legal consequences for his extensive and violent criminal history. For the murders of David Martin and Theodore Fields, he was tried on both federal civil rights charges and state first-degree murder charges. He was convicted of both murders and received a life sentence. Franklin's violent spree came to a definitive end when he was executed on November 20, 2013, for a different murder he had committed in 1977.
