On a Tuesday afternoon, February 5, 2019, tragedy struck in a West Valley City home, forever altering the lives of a group of teenagers. Fifteen-year-old Hispanic male, Marquez Grajeda, was with friends at a house on the 1300 block of West 2320 South during their lunch break from school. Inside a bedroom of the residence, what should have been a carefree interlude from classes turned into a scene of devastating violence.
Around 12:45 p.m., a single gunshot shattered the ordinary day, inflicting a fatal head wound upon Marquez. Though emergency services were called and he was rushed to a local hospital, his injuries proved too severe, and he passed away shortly after arrival.
The immediate aftermath was one of chaos and hysteria as responding officers arrived at a house filled with distraught juveniles and adults. The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on a 14-year-old boy who was present in the room with Marquez. This individual, whose name has been withheld due to his age, was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. It was later revealed that the 14-year-old had been handling a firearm he reportedly believed to be unloaded or to have the safety engaged. Despite another teen in the room allegedly warning him that the gun was loaded, he pointed the weapon at Marquez and pulled the trigger.

He was subsequently charged in juvenile court with manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and obstruction of justice. Investigators learned that the suspect claimed he had never handled a firearm before and did not believe it would fire. The investigation also led to the recovery of multiple firearms, including the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting, which was found by a dive team in a nearby canal.
