In a quiet suburban Salt Lake City neighborhood, a tragic story unfolded that began with a family's flight from violence and ended in a devastating act that claimed multiple lives. Asian male Boe Reh, an 11-year-old boy described as a "smiling giant," was among the victims of a heart-wrenching murder-suicide that took place on or around December 14, 2024.
The family, Karenni refugees who had escaped ethnic cleansing in their home country of Myanmar over a decade prior, had sought sanctuary in the United States, hoping to build a new life free from the persecution they had once known. They had settled in West Valley City, and by all outward appearances, were a happy family actively involved in their community.
The peace the family had sought was shattered in the most unimaginable way. Authorities believe that Boe Reh's father, 42-year-old Dae Reh, shot and killed his wife, 38-year-old Bu Meh, and three of their children: Boe Reh, 8-year-old Kristina Ree, and 2-year-old Nyay Meh. After carrying out these horrific acts, Dae Reh then took his own life. The grim discovery was made after Bu Meh failed to show up for work and a concerned relative went to their home to check on the family. Inside, a scene of profound tragedy was revealed. The bodies of Bu Meh and her two young daughters were found upstairs, while Boe Reh and his father were discovered downstairs.
Miraculously, there was a lone survivor amidst the carnage. Boe Reh's older brother, 17-year-old Sha Reh, was found in the garage with a critical gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the hospital and has since been hailed as a "hero" by his extended family as he begins a long and arduous road to recovery.
