In the early morning hours of January 14, 2024, the life of 18-year-old Gabriel Vigil, a male, was cut short in Salt Lake City, Utah. The fatal incident unfolded near 350 East and 800 South in the Central City neighborhood, where police responded to calls of a shooting at approximately 2:37 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Vigil on the ground near a sidewalk, having sustained at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The area was littered with evidence of the violence that had transpired, with gunfire damage found on a nearby house, a fence, and multiple parked vehicles.
The investigation into Vigil's death quickly revealed that the shooting was connected to a birthday party held at a nearby Airbnb rental. Detectives determined that an argument at the party escalated into a physical altercation. Following the shooting, many of the party attendees and witnesses fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. An initial arrest was made on the same day, with 23-year-old Tommi Gallegos taken into custody and charged with obstruction of justice. Authorities stated that she provided false statements to hinder or delay the investigation.
Further investigation by the Salt Lake City Police Department's Homicide Squad uncovered a more complex and tragic series of events. It is believed that Gabriel Vigil himself was one of four individuals who were firing weapons that morning. The group had allegedly gone to the party with the intention of carjacking another individual. Surveillance footage showed four males, including Vigil, approaching the residence and opening fire. In a turn of events described by police as 'friendly fire,' Vigil was struck and killed by a round fired by one of his own associates.
Subsequent arrests were made in connection with the homicide. A 16-year-old male, also alleged to be one of the shooters, was arrested on February 2. On February 7, 20-year-old Isidore Junior Barrera was taken into custody and charged with multiple counts of felony discharge of a firearm. The fourth suspected shooter, 19-year-old Maricio Amar Reyes Valdez, also faced charges including aggravated robbery and multiple counts of discharging a firearm. The investigation suggests the motive was tied to a plan to assault and carjack someone at the party.
