On the morning of December 14, 2025, Salt Lake City police officers were dispatched to the Sugar House neighborhood following reports of a possible overdose. Upon arriving at the scene near 2131 South Lincoln Street, adjacent to a Smith's grocery store, first responders discovered the body of 58-year-old male Steve Gus Kallas lying on the ground near a recreational vehicle.
While initial reports classified the death as suspicious, further examination by fire department personnel revealed a wound to the victim's chest consistent with gunfire, leading authorities to reclassify the incident as a homicide. Kallas, who was known to reside in the RV, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives from the Salt Lake City Police Department's Homicide Squad launched an investigation, utilizing surveillance footage from nearby businesses to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. The video evidence reportedly captured a violent confrontation occurring around 3:30 a.m., showing a suspect exiting a vehicle and firing multiple rounds into the victim's motorhome. The footage further depicted the assailant attempting to ignite a Molotov cocktail before Kallas emerged from the vehicle and deployed bear spray in self-defense. The suspect then fired additional shots at Kallas as he attempted to flee across the street, eventually striking him before driving away from the scene.
Following the review of evidence, police identified 36-year-old Nathaniel Douglas Stockton as the primary suspect. Authorities alleged that the altercation stemmed from a dispute over a drug debt that Kallas owed to Stockton. On the evening of December 17, investigators, assisted by the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and SWAT, located and arrested Stockton during a traffic stop near 7800 South and 2700 West. A search of his vehicle yielded two firearms and quantities of methamphetamine. Stockton was subsequently booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on numerous charges, including aggravated murder, attempted aggravated arson, drug possession, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, and ten counts of felony discharge of a firearm.
