In the early morning hours of September 29, 2021, in Murray, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, the life of 22-year-old Carlos Jhovany Huerta-Garcia was tragically cut short. Emergency services received a call around 1:50 a.m. reporting a shooting at a residence located at 125 E. 4800 South. Upon arrival, police discovered Huerta-Garcia just inside the front door, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a local hospital in extremely critical condition but succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Authorities believe that Huerta-Garcia was acquainted with the person who shot him. After the shooting, the gunman reportedly fled the scene.
The subsequent homicide investigation brought scrutiny upon those present at the house during the incident. Although not believed to be a resident, Huerta-Garcia was associated with the occupants of the home and was inside prior to the shooting. Among those present was Vanessa Lucia Arnold, 40, who was identified as Huerta-Garcia's girlfriend. Initially, Arnold told detectives she had been in her room for about 24 hours before the shooting, only leaving once briefly. However, her account was contradicted by surveillance footage from a nearby business. The video showed Arnold going back and forth between the residence and a camper trailer with a male for over an hour leading up to the shooting. This male was identified as a family member of Arnold's and was seen on the video leaving the area in a vehicle just seconds after the gunshot.
Confronted with the video evidence and confirmation from another family member about the male's presence, Arnold continued to deny that he was there or that she had been outside engaging in any activity possibly related to the homicide. She also provided conflicting names for the man who drove the vehicle away from the scene. Due to her inconsistent and untruthful statements, authorities arrested Vanessa Lucia Arnold in mid-October 2021 on charges of obstruction of justice. Investigators stated their belief that she was purposefully withholding information about the suspect and the events surrounding the homicide. As of October 2021, the alleged gunman had not been arrested, and the investigation into the death of Carlos Jhovany Huerta-Garcia remained active.
