2 cousins are found shot to death\n In the late summer of 1982, a young Hispanic male named Miguel Antonio Hernandez, aged 18, had recently made a new home in the Salt Lake area, having moved from Santa Ana, California. Originally from El Salvador, he came to Utah to live with his cousin, Emeterio Melgar Hernandez. The evening of August 13, 1982, found Miguel and Emeterio attending a dance together, a night that would tragically be the last time anyone reported seeing Miguel alive.
Four days later, on August 17, 1982, the
grim discovery of Miguel's body was made by hikers in a brushy area about 100 yards off the road situated between East Canyon and Immigration Canyon. An investigation determined that the young man had died from gunshot wounds. The case took an even darker turn when the body of Miguel's uncle was found a short distance away, having met a similar fate around the same time.
The deaths of Miguel Antonio Hernandez and his uncle were classified as a double homicide. Despite the investigation into their murders, the case grew cold over the years. To this day, the homicide of Miguel Antonio Hernandez remains unsolved, with no publicly identified suspects or arrests made in connection with the crime that cut his young life short.
