In the late hours of September 10, 1988, 34-year-old Kirk Merrill Pitcher was relaxing in his Taylorsville, Utah, home, enjoying the company of friends as they watched television. As the night grew later, his friends departed around 1:00 a.m., leaving Kirk in the quiet house with his roommates, who had already turned in for the night.
