In the late summer of 1978, a 37-year-old male named Richard E. Stanley was enjoying an evening with a friend at the Oakridge campground, a recreational spot nestled within the natural beauty of Big Cottonwood Canyon, east of Salt Lake City, Utah. The tranquil setting, however, was tragically shattered on August 21st. As Stanley and his companion were present at the campground, an argument broke out, described as unprovoked, with an unknown individual.
