Exelina Hernandez, a 31-year-old woman from El Salvador, disappeared on November 1, 2013, after entering the United States through Texas. Fleeing from the dangers posed by gangs in her home country, she embarked on a harrowing journey, hoping to reunite with her family in Dallas. After crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, Exelina called her family to inform them that she had reached Brownsville, Texas, and planned to make her way to Dallas.
This, however, was the last contact her family had with her.
Exelina’s journey through Texas involved crossing dangerous terrain in Brooks County, where many migrants attempting to bypass border patrol checkpoints often meet perilous conditions. She was part of a group led by smugglers, and while they made every effort to help her, Exelina was unable to continue due to exhaustion. According to a fellow traveler, they carried her as far as they could, but eventually had to leave her behind in the unforgiving brush. This part of her journey, near Falfurrias, Texas, is notorious for being a graveyard for migrants who die from exposure and dehydration as they attempt to evade authorities. Her family has never stopped searching for her, but she has remained missing since that day.
Despite exhaustive searches by her family and local authorities, Exelina's whereabouts remain unknown. Her mother, Elsy, has tirelessly contacted humanitarian groups, local law enforcement, and even mortuaries, hoping for any sign of her daughter.
