In Salt Lake City on a Saturday, the life of 17-year-old Muridthi Hamadi was tragically cut short. On February 11, 2023, inside an apartment near 1600 W. Ivy Circle, a single gunshot to the chest would prove fatal for the teenage boy. When police arrived at the scene, they found him not breathing. He was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, a 14-year-old boy.
Several witnesses at the apartment identified the younger teen as the shooter. This led to a search for the suspect, who was located by police two days later, on a Monday, at an apartment near 300 East and 700 South. He was then taken into custody.
Following his arrest, the 14-year-old suspect appeared before a judge via video conference from a juvenile detention center. During this hearing, it was ordered that he would remain in custody. The court heard that the boy had a history of running away from a foster home and had previously been listed as missing and endangered. Given his history and the serious nature of the accusation, it was determined that he would stay in detention.
