On a summer day in Salt Lake City, June 25, 2007, the life of Stephen Anderson, a 60-year-old White male, was tragically cut short. A veteran correctional officer with 22 years of service, Anderson was escorting an inmate, Curtis Allgier, to a medical appointment at the University of Utah Medical Center. It was during this seemingly routine transport that the situation turned deadly.
Inside an examination room, while preparing for an MRI, Allgier managed to overpower Anderson and take his firearm. He then fatally shot the officer.
Following the shooting, Allgier fled the medical facility, initiating a desperate and dangerous attempt to escape. He carjacked a vehicle and led police on a high-speed chase through the city. The pursuit came to a dramatic end when Allgier crashed the stolen vehicle into a fast-food restaurant. Inside the establishment, he brandished the weapon, attempting to take hostages. However, a courageous customer intervened and managed to disarm him, holding him until law enforcement arrived and took him into custody.
The suspect, Curtis Allgier, was no stranger to the law, having a significant criminal history. For his actions on that fateful day, he faced the full force of the justice system. To avoid a potential death sentence, Allgier ultimately pleaded guilty to the murder of Stephen Anderson. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would remain incarcerated for the remainder of his life for the violent murder of a dedicated public servant.
