On a Saturday night in Salt Lake City, on November 26, 2016, a confrontation in an apartment on Redwood Road turned fatal for 33-year-old Kenonren Good. The resident of the apartment, 34-year-old Leroy Daniel Valdez, arrived to find himself locked out of his own home. Believing people were inside, he took matters into his own hands.
Valdez, armed with a handgun, first kicked in a window to his roommate's bedroom, startling a woman inside. He then moved to the front door, forcing it open. Upon entering his apartment, Valdez was met by Good. A struggle quickly broke out between the two men. In the ensuing chaos, Valdez's gun discharged, firing a single shot that struck and killed Good at the scene.
Initially, Valdez fled the apartment complex after the shooting. However, he later had a change of heart and returned to the scene to surrender to the authorities who had been called by a neighbor who heard the gunshot. During his arrest, officers discovered methamphetamine in Valdez's possession. He was subsequently booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
Initially arrested on suspicion of murder with his bail set at one million dollars, the charges against Leroy Daniel Valdez were later adjusted. Following an investigation into the complex circumstances of the night, he was formally charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and obstruction of justice, a third-degree felony.
