In the early morning hours of July 9, 2017, a small backyard gathering in West Valley City, Utah, turned deadly, ending the life of 35-year-old Jason Bull, a White / Caucasian male. The night was filled with alcohol when an argument broke out among several men at the party, which was taking place at a home near 4274 West 4695 South. The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical fight.
During the brawl, one of the men, identified as 36-year-old Marshall Herron, left the residence
and walked to his own nearby home. He returned moments later armed with a handgun. Herron proceeded to open fire, striking Bull multiple times. A second man, who was 32 years old, was also shot in the lower body but was expected to survive his injuries. Police were called to the scene just after 2 a.m. to respond to reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Jason Bull deceased.
Marshall Herron did not flee the scene after the shooting. He remained at the residence and surrendered to the authorities when they arrived. Herron reportedly told police multiple times that he had shot Bull but declined to provide further details without an attorney present. Investigators noted that witnesses were uncooperative, and that both alcohol and drugs were factors in the tragic incident. Herron was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of murder. Two handguns were recovered from the scene.
