In the pre-dawn hours of April 26, 2021, the life of 21-year-old Ryan Prendergast, a Caucasian male, was cut short by a fatal act of violence in Salt Lake City, Utah. Prendergast was residing in a tent near 900 South and 500 West with a female companion when the tragic events unfolded. Around 4:40 a.m., a man, later identified as 33-year-old William Henry Clark, drove to the encampment and confronted the woman, who was his ex-girlfriend.
Clark demanded she leave with him and, at one point, pressed the barrel of a firearm to her cheek.
Upon hearing the commotion, Prendergast emerged from the tent. It was then that Clark fired a single, fatal shot, striking Prendergast in the chest before fleeing the scene in his vehicle. The woman immediately called for help, initiating a homicide investigation by the Salt Lake City Police Department. Witnesses at the nearby homeless encampment reported seeing a sedan in the area around the time of the shooting, which aided police in their search for the suspect. The motive for the killing appeared to be rooted in Clark's jealousy and anger, as he had sent threatening messages to his ex-girlfriend prior to the incident, including one that read, "I'm gonna smash ur new man".
The search for William Henry Clark culminated in a tense, 12-hour standoff with law enforcement the following day. Acting on a tip, police located Clark at the Oquirrh Hills Apartments in Magna, where he had barricaded himself inside a residence with his 14-year-old son. Despite negotiators' efforts to encourage a peaceful surrender, Clark refused to exit the apartment. The standoff concluded in the early morning hours of April 28 when a SWAT team deployed tear gas, forcing Clark and his son out of the residence. Both were taken into custody and received medical attention for exposure to the gas.
Following his arrest, William Henry Clark faced multiple charges, including aggravated murder and aggravated kidnapping. At the time of the shooting, Clark was on felony probation for previous drug and weapons charges and had a significant criminal history. In March 2023, a jury found him guilty of the murder of Ryan Prendergast, as well as aggravated kidnapping and possession of a firearm by a restricted person. The conviction brought a measure of justice for the violent and senseless death of a young man who was killed while coming to the defense of a friend.
