On January 5, 1957, Ruth Speyer and her husband, Bernard, entered Caso's Shoe Store in North Haven, Connecticut, unaware of the imminent danger. Inside, they encountered Joseph "Mad Dog" Taborsky and his accomplice, Arthur "Meatball" Culombe, who were in the midst of a violent robbery. The store's co-owner, Frank Adinolfi, had already been brutally beaten and left for dead.
