On a tragic Father's Day in Hartford, Connecticut, a dispute between neighbors over a dog escalated into a violent confrontation that ultimately claimed the life of 27-year-old Nikia Rankins, a Black female. The incident, which occurred on June 19, 2022, also resulted in the deaths of two other individuals, Chase Garrett, 39, and Christine Dang, 27.
The conflict reportedly began earlier in the day and centered around Rankins' small pit bull puppy.
Tensions flared at a multi-family home on Franklin Avenue, where an ongoing feud between Rankins and Dang intensified. That evening, Donovan McFarlane, 31, the father of Rankins' three-year-old daughter, arrived to pick up their child and became involved in the altercation.
According to McFarlane's account to the police, the argument escalated, and Garrett brandished a firearm. Garrett then allegedly shot Rankins in the neck and stomach. In what he claimed was an act of self-defense, McFarlane, who was also struck by gunfire in his shoulder, drew his own weapon and fired at Garrett and Dang, fatally wounding them. At the time of the shooting, Dang was holding their 4 ½-month-old baby in an infant carrier; the child was physically unharmed.
First responders arrived at the scene just before 9:10 p.m. to find Garrett and Dang unresponsive; they were pronounced dead at the scene. Rankins was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on July 1, 2022. McFarlane fled the scene with his daughter before authorities arrived and was later charged with criminal possession of a firearm. He was released after posting a $400,000 bond. The investigation into the triple homicide remains active and ongoing.
