In the late afternoon of November 19, 2024, a burst of gunfire on New Britain Avenue in Hartford shattered the autumn calm and ended two lives in a tragic instant. Jessiah Mercado, a 20-year-old Hispanic female, was shot and killed in a brazen drive-by shooting. Riding in the car with her was her infant son, 4-month-old Messiah Diaz, who was also fatally wounded. A third passenger, a man in his 20s, was injured in the attack, while the driver of the vehicle escaped unharmed.
The driver rushed the victims to Hartford Hospital, but both Jessiah and her baby were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the shocking double homicide quickly focused on a dispute over a vehicle. Hartford police identified 23-year-old Lance Morales, also known as "Macho," as the primary suspect. According to authorities, Morales pulled his vehicle alongside the car carrying Jessiah and her son and opened fire. An arrest warrant was swiftly issued for Morales, charging him with two counts of murder, criminal possession of a firearm, and first-degree assault, with a bond set at $3 million.
A manhunt for Morales ensued, culminating in his capture four days later in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, by the U.S. Marshals Service. Following his arrest, Morales was extradited back to Connecticut to face justice. At his arraignment in late December 2024, a judge increased his bail to $5 million. Morales was charged with murder with special circumstances, a charge in Connecticut law that applies to the killing of two or more people in a single event and carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of release. The community was left to mourn the senseless loss of a young mother and her child, a tragedy that resonated deeply across the city.
