On a December evening in Atmore, Alabama, the life of 32-year-old Rakeem 'Rock' Phillips, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. The night of December 6, 2024, at the Point Escambia Apartments, an altercation escalated to gunfire. At approximately 10:55 p.m., officers from the Atmore Police Department responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Phillips suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Atmore Community Hospital and subsequently airlifted to a trauma center for advanced care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Rakeem Phillips succumbed to his injuries two days later, on December 8, 2024.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect. Police identified 31-year-old Gelonté Giles as the individual involved in the altercation with Phillips. It is alleged that during the dispute, Giles produced a firearm and fired several rounds, striking Phillips multiple times. Giles was located by law enforcement and taken into custody shortly after the incident. Initially, he faced charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied building. Following Phillips' death, the charges against Giles were upgraded to murder. He is currently being held at the Escambia County Detention Center without bond.
In the wake of this violence, Rakeem Phillips's family and the Atmore community have been left to grieve a profound loss. Remembered for his loving nature and community involvement, his death has sparked conversations about gun violence and conflict resolution within the city. In a final act of generosity, Phillips was an organ donor, and his family has found a small measure of comfort in knowing that his organs have saved the lives of five other individuals. A recording of his heartbeat, preserved through the organ donation process, serves as a poignant reminder of the life that was lost. Funeral services were held on December 21, 2024, at Grace Fellowship Church, where friends and family gathered to honor his memory before he was laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery.
