On the evening of December 8, 2024, in Atmore, Alabama, 25-year-old Juwan McNeal and his friend, 27-year-old Joe Jones Jr., were fatally shot while sitting in a vehicle in the yard of a residence on Ashley Street. The two men were ambushed by a person or persons who reportedly emerged from behind a house and opened fire on their vehicle. When law enforcement and emergency services arrived at the scene around 8:15 p.m., both McNeal and Jones were already deceased.
Investigators recovered approximately 20 shell casings from the area surrounding the car.
The senseless act of violence left the community and McNeal's family heartbroken and searching for answers. The grief was compounded when Juwan McNeal's 54-year-old father, Scottie McNeil, suffered a fatal heart attack on December 11, just three days after his son's murder. His family believes the immense sorrow of losing his son was too much for him to bear. Juwan McNeal was a father himself, leaving behind a young son named Jordan.
For months, the investigation into the double homicide continued, with the Atmore Police Department following up on leads and interviewing witnesses. The case remained under active investigation, with evidence being sent to a state crime lab for analysis. Then, in a significant development, 18-year-old Dexter Adams was charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Juwan McNeal and Joe Jones Jr. Adams was already in custody for a separate shooting incident that occurred in May 2025. In that case, he faced charges of attempted murder and other offenses after allegedly firing into a vehicle and a nearby restaurant. Atmore Police have indicated that additional arrests in the double murder case are possible.
