On April 26, 2017, at approximately 10:16 p.m., the Escambia County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire and a possible domestic disturbance on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Atmore, Alabama. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a Crown Victoria partially off the roadway, resting against a tree, with 20-year-old Donta Demorris Russell in the driver's seat, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
