On the night of April 26, 2017, in Atmore, Alabama, a young Black man's life was cut short by gunfire. Donta Demorris Russell, 20 years old, was driving his Crown Victoria along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when shots rang out around 10:16 p.m. Responding to reports of a possible domestic disturbance and gunfire, deputies from the Escambia County Sheriff's Office arrived to a grim scene.
They discovered Russell's vehicle partially off the road, having come to a rest against a tree in the yard of a residence on Old Ship Circle.
Inside the car, Donta Demorris Russell was found in the driver's seat, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the location, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial reports suggested that he may have been shot additional times after his car crashed. The investigation into the shooting death began, marking the first homicide in Atmore for 2017.
The investigation led to a grand jury indictment of two Atmore men on capital murder charges. Darrell Brown, 29, and Yeldon Devonta Rostchild, 23, were arrested and held without bond in the Escambia County Detention Center. The charge of capital murder carried the potential for a sentence of either the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Nearly seven years after the indictment, in January 2024, there was a significant development in the case. Yeldon Devonta Rostchild was released from the Escambia County Detention Center. His release came after he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of obstruction of justice, for which he was given credit for time served.
