In the summer of 2002, a 26-year-old woman named Sonjah Nicole Kingston vanished from her home in Greensboro, North Carolina. On July 2nd, she departed from her residence and was never heard from again. Sonjah, also known by her nicknames Roxie or Rocky, was a Black female with brown eyes and black, medium-length braided hair. She stood at 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed around 150 pounds.
Distinctive features included a birthmark on one of her legs, piercings in her tongue and lip, a scar on her left cheek, and multiple tattoos on her breast, forearms, calf, thigh, and buttock. At the time she went missing, it is believed she was wearing a shirt, sweatpants, sneakers, and contact lenses, an outfit her friends considered uncharacteristic for her to wear outside of her home. She was last seen driving her dark green 1995 Mazda Protege with North Carolina license plate number PTL-7712.
The circumstances surrounding Sonjah Kingston's disappearance are complex and have led investigators to suspect foul play. Prior to vanishing, Sonjah was employed as a dancer and was reportedly involved in criminal activities. She was romantically linked to a man involved in drug and gun smuggling and was alleged to have worked as a drug courier for him. In November 2001, she was arrested for drug possession. Following this incident, her romantic partner reportedly stopped using her as a courier but their relationship continued. It has also been suggested that Sonjah was simultaneously dating another drug dealer. This lifestyle and her connections have fueled speculation and various theories about what may have happened to her.
Over the years, numerous rumors have circulated regarding Sonjah's fate, with some speculating she was murdered and her body disposed of in Virginia or New York, while others believe she may be alive and living in the Virgin Islands or New York. The man she was involved with was also implicated in the 1997 disappearance of another Greensboro resident. He was arrested on drug charges in 2002 and later cooperated with authorities for a lighter sentence, but was never charged in connection with Sonjah's case. The Greensboro Police Department is handling the investigation into Sonjah's disappearance. Her case remains an unsolved and troubling mystery, leaving her family and community without answers about her whereabouts or what transpired on that July day.Last Seen: Jul 2, 2002
