In the early hours of Sunday, September 2, 2018, the sounds of a house party on Hillside Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut, were tragically silenced by gunfire. Kevin Campbell, a 34-year-old Black/African American male from Windsor, was among the attendees when violence erupted. Just before 1:30 a.m., multiple shots were fired into the crowd of dozens gathered in the yard.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered a chaotic situation with multiple victims.
Campbell was found suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Hartford Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. Another man, 28-year-old Joshua Steele of Hartford, also lost his life in the shooting, and a third individual was treated for a gunshot wound to the foot. In the immediate aftermath, Hillside Avenue was closed for hours as detectives began the painstaking process of investigating the deadly shooting.
Despite the large number of people present at the party, the investigation quickly ran into difficulties due to a lack of cooperating witnesses. Authorities have stated their belief that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather a targeted attack carried out by what they suspect was a single shooter. In the days following the incident, family, friends, and community members gathered for a vigil to honor the lives of both Kevin Campbell and Joshua Steele, pleading for anyone with information to come forward. However, despite these public appeals for justice, no arrests have ever been made in connection with the murders.
