In the cold winter of 2014, the city of Hartford was rocked by its first homicide of the year. On the evening of January 15th, the sound of multiple gunshots echoed through the area around 85 Sumner Street. Responding to calls from concerned neighbors, police arrived to a grim scene in the parking lot. There they found 33-year-old Mark McNickle, a male, suffering from several gunshot wounds.
Witnesses later recounted hearing between seven and eight shots before a vehicle was seen speeding away from the area. McNickle was rushed to St. Francis Hospital, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into McNickle's death was swift. Detectives from the Hartford Police Department's Major Crimes Division diligently followed leads, and their investigation soon pointed them toward a suspect. Less than two weeks after the shooting, on January 30th, law enforcement executed search warrants at a residence in the nearby town of Manchester. Inside the apartment on Buckland Street, they found 28-year-old Deranna Fletcher, along with a significant cache of evidence. Police seized 98 pounds of marijuana, nearly $40,000 in cash, two firearms, and ammunition.
With the evidence gathered, Deranna Fletcher was arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and criminal possession of a firearm. His bond was set at a formidable $2 million. The arrest brought a sense of resolution to the city's first homicide of the year, though the motive for the violent encounter remained a key focus for investigators. The discovery of the drugs and weapons at Fletcher's home suggested a deeper criminal element was at play, leaving the community to grapple with the violent end to Mark McNickle's life.
